There's some luster loss from most of the high points, but this adds to the shiny tips and the softly textured background, for a lovely 'old-world' feel. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis antique (over 100 years old) button is hand set into sterling silver, with a rope border, and it suspends from a handmade bail. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGlass buttons began to be silvered, or \"lustered\" in the late 1800s as an alternative to the by-then ubiquitous black glass button. The lustered buttons twinkled more in fire- or candlelight (the Victorians had no electricity). Having no zippers, velcro, or other fasteners other than hook-and-eye closures or buttons, Victorian women often had rows of buttons (decorative as well as functional) on dress bodices, arm sleeves, or on their boots. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e**Materials: glass, sterling silver.
