The by-chance distinct color zones give it a land-and-sea effect, rendered beautifully at small scale. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpheres in various sizes arc across the top of the setting. Each sphere is individually placed so the grouping gives a \"frilled\" effect which ornaments the stone, rather than overpowering it. When the replacing mineral is silica in the opal family, the result is opalized wood: a stone that retains the structural memory of the original wood while taking on the optical properties of opal. The color in opalized wood comes from trace minerals present in the groundwater during the replacement process. In this pendant, the bright teal-green was produced by dissolved copper, iron, and manganese that moved through the material as the wood mineralized. The deep red-brown reflects a different mineral environment, at a different stage of the same process.
