There’s a quality that belongs only to this season and the feeling it brings with it, a particular quality of aliveness that’s unfinished: a reaching, a turning toward the light without yet knowing what the light will ask of it. Every culture that’s lived through a cold season has marked this moment by naming it, celebrating it, building rituals around it to revel in the season from which all else unfolds.

In this series of seasonal female figures, Spring's hair streams loose behind her, flowers threaded in and a decorative ornament catching the light at her temple. In her raised hand she holds a single bloom forward, an open gesture toward the light that fills the upper scene above her. She's the only left-facing image while Summer, Autumn, and Winter face right or forward, toward maturity and wisdom. But Spring is youth still oriented toward the beginning, her possibilities wide open, her potential yet untapped. Or perhaps she simply hasn't turned around yet. It's a small compositional choice that carries real weight once you know it.

The concept of first emergence is one of the oldest in human culture. Before calendars, before clocks, before any of the frameworks people built to organize time, there was the direct experience of winter ending: the first shoot pushing through frozen ground, the first morning that felt different from the one before, the day the light lingered just a bit longer. The ancient Greeks personified this moment as Persephone returning from the underworld, her footsteps bringing flowers up behind her. The Celts marked it at Imbolc, the first stirring of spring, when Brigid walked the earth and the ground softened where she stepped.

The French Art Nouveau movement, roughly 1890 to 1910, made the female figure into nature itself: hair became vines, faces emerged from petals, and bodies dissolved into landscape. The buttons produced in this tradition are among the finest small-scale relief work of the period. This is an excellent example with fine detail, a design that fills the frame without crowding it, and a figure that reads as both specific and archetypal. She is Spring. She’s also every girl who was young before she knew what that meant.

This pendant is part of a series of four, each cast from a French Art Nouveau button of the early twentieth century. Summer, Autumn, and Winter are each listed separately in the shop. They can be worn alone or collected over time, one season at a time.

Cast sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.

The pendant measures 1¼ inches, or 3.2 cm, long and ¾ inch, or 1.9 cm, wide, including the bail. Weight: 4.5 grams.

Each pendant is available without a chain, so you may use your own if you prefer. If you want to add a chain, I offer different lengths and styles. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender, so you can vary the length. Please choose your chain from the options at checkout.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: the girl who's discovering who she is and hasn't yet learned to doubt it. The friend emerging from a long grief who's finding her way back to color and warmth and the small pleasures that make a life. The woman who's closed one chapter and stands at the beginning of the next, aware for the first time that she gets to choose what the new one is about.

Questions?
