Aurora is the goddess of the dawn, and every morning she renews herself and flies across the sky to bring light to the world. On this pendant she is shown mid-flight, scattering rose petals as she goes. She carries a small child holding a torch: this is the Genius, or spirit, of Light.

In Roman mythology, a Genius was a divine presence attached to every person, place, or thing. The Romans understood it as a kind of animating spirit, a guardian force, not unlike what later traditions would call a guardian angel. Every man was accompanied by his Genius from birth until death; for women, the equivalent was the Juno spirit. Aurora carries hers as a child with a torch, lighting the way.

Behind her, sun rays radiate outward, and a crescent moon and five stars complete the sky. Five is significant in many traditions; the stars may represent the visible planets known to the ancient world, or simply the heavens in their fullness. The image was designed in the Victorian era and every element in it was chosen deliberately.

Aurora has long been a symbol of new beginnings and fresh opportunities. She rises the same way every day, regardless of what happened the day before. A good guideline for us mere mortals. Cast in sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and stamped .925. The pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and just under 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) wide, roughly the size of a Susan B. Anthony dollar. Weight is 11 grams.
