Apatite is one of those stones that resists a simple color description, which is part of what makes it worth looking at. The oval cabochons in this pair are a deep, saturated teal. In certain light the color shifts toward a muted blue-green, and in others toward a deeper, almost stormy tone. It's a complex stone with a deceptively robust color.

The typical apatite gem is faceted, transparent, and bright. Cabochons like these, opaque and richly patterned, are chosen for an entirely different quality: the way the surface holds and diffuses light rather than throwing it back. Apatite cabochons with this kind of internal texture and color depth are not the norm.

A small textured open circle sits above each bezel, flanked by two silver spheres where the loop meets the stone. 

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 1 inch (2.5 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and just over ½ inch (1.3 cm) wide. Weight is 7.5 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

Apatite is found on every continent, with gem-quality deposits in Brazil, Madagascar, and India.
