The banding in this agate slice moves the way weather does: white wisps drifting across a gray and near-black surface in soft, sweeping arcs that don't settle into a pattern so much as suggest one. It's a stone that looks different depending on where the light is coming from and how long you spend with it.

At the center, the druzy pocket is left in its natural state, the crystal surface undulating in and out rather than lying flat, showing more or less of the individual points depending on the angle. A cluster of silver spheres has been set into the pocket alongside the crystals, filling the negative space without flattening it. The result is a center that has depth and texture in equal measure.

The backing has been hand-scalloped to follow the natural oval shape of the geode, with a textured surface and a deliberate dark patina that deepens the contrast between the frame and the stone's pale interior. Silver spheres travel around the scalloped perimeter and up onto the handmade bail, giving the composition a continuity from edge to top.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures 2 inches (5.1 cm) long from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pendant, and 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) wide. Weight is 16.1 grams.

About Agate Slices: 

Geode slices are thin cross-sections of agate geodes from Brazil, cut to reveal the banding and crystal formations inside. The patterns vary from stone to stone — no two geodes produce the same interior — and most have a central druzy pocket where fine crystals formed as the geode developed. Agate is a hard, durable chalcedony that takes a high polish and is found worldwide, but Brazilian geodes are particularly prized for the range and clarity of their banding.
