Description

Blue and magenta are color wheel adjacent, which allows them to complement instead of compete with each other. The organically shaped apatite cabochon at the center of this pendant is a vivid sky blue, light and dark moving across the surface in a mix of opacity and faint translucency that gives the stone an internal quality, the color running deep below the surface. Below it, a small round magenta pink tourmaline sits in its own bezel. It's a smaller, but by no means secondary, player.

The pendant is an oval shape filled with a field of silver spheres covering the surface in a texture that catches light the way the stones do: differently at every angle, but these tiny granules twinkle and wink as light shifts over the design. A deliberate dark patina in the low areas deepens the contrast between the spheres and the gems, while the handmade bail above continues the wavy character of the pendant's reverse, tying front and back together.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures just under 2 inches (5.1 cm) long from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pendant, and just under 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is 14.5 grams.

Each pendant is available without a chain, so you may use your own if you prefer. If you want to add a chain, I offer different lengths and styles. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length. Please choose your chain from the options at checkout.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: the woman who wears color with total conviction. The collector who picks the bold thing first, and the safe thing never. The bold soul whose taste runs toward the vivid and the considered in equal measure.

About Apatite:

Apatite is found throughout the world, notably in Brazil and India. Outside of collector and jewelry circles it's relatively unknown, which is part of what makes it worth knowing. It has a wide color range but is most recognized in its blue varieties, where it can range from pale sky blue to deep teal. It's sometimes mistaken for other blue gems, including beryl and tourmaline, though it has a distinctive internal quality that sets it apart.

About Tourmaline:

Tourmaline has one of the widest color ranges of any gem. It's found in the United States, Brazil, Madagascar, and Afghanistan, among other locations. Many varieties go by their own trade names: Rubellite for pink and red, Indicolite for dark blue, Paraiba for teal, Chrome for green. It's recognized as a birthstone for October. The pink to magenta range is among the most saturated tourmaline produces, and stones with this depth of color are consistently in demand among collectors.
