Crazy lace agate has a pattern problem in the best possible sense. These large teardrop cabochons are dense with movement, warm rust-orange and cream and soft gray banding in tight, layered swirls across the surface, with a slightly translucent area in one stone where the pattern opens briefly before closing again. They read like a cross-section of a canyon wall where every stratum tells a different story. The color is warm and complex without being loud, the kind of stone that rewards time spent looking at it rather than a quick glance from across the room.

Above each teardrop, a small Keshi pearl sits in its own bezel, gray-silver and quietly lustrous, with the slightly irregular surface that distinguishes it from its more uniform cousins. The pearl doesn't match the agate in color or character, but that's the point. The contrast between the warm, patterned stone below and the cool, reflective pearl above is what makes the pairing work.

Between the two gems are curved, textured, bars with small silver spheres at the joints. The same connective element that turns two separate bezels into a single considered piece.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 2 inches (5.1 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and ¾ inch (1.9 cm) wide. Weight is 16 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

About Crazy Lace Agate:

Found only in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, crazy lace agate gets its name from the intricate banding that swirls across its surface in tight, layered patterns. The color palette runs from cream and soft gray through warm tan and brown, with rust-orange and red tones that are the hardest to find and the most prized. No two stones cut from the same deposit will have the same pattern. Its a variety of chalcedony, formed in volcanic rock, and the banding records successive layers of silica-rich fluid deposited over time. The stones with the most complex patterning, like the ones in these earrings, are typically cut by gem cutters who know which face of the rough material to orient toward the surface.

About Keshi Pearls:

Keshi pearls form as a byproduct of the pearl cultivation process, when a mollusk rejects its nucleus and deposits nacre around the remaining tissue instead. The result is a pearl composed entirely of nacre, with no nucleus at all, which gives these pearls a more intense luster than most cultured versions. The irregular, slightly flattened shape is characteristic: no two are identical, and the organic surface catches light differently at every angle. The gray-silver color in these particular pearls comes from pigmentation in the nacre layers during formation. Keshi pearls have been prized by collectors precisely because their irregularity and pure nacre composition set them apart from round cultured pearls in both appearance and character.
