This crazy lace agate cabochon asks for rather than demands your attention. The bands of cream, rust, gold, and soft pink move across the stone with a watery effect that looks less like geology and more like something poured and left to find its own pattern. This elegant teardrop manages to be warm and restless at the same time, its pinky orange-red hues unusual to find in what's more typically a neutral gem.

Spheres of various sizes surround the stone. Each sphere is individually planned and placed so the grouping gives a "frilled" effect, which ornaments the stone rather than overpowering it. The contrast between the warm, soft tones of the agate and the dark oxidized silver gives the pendant a presence that carries well beyond its size.

Hallmarked .925 and Blue Piranha.

Size: 1 and 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) long from top of bail to bottom of pendant, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is 12.4 grams.

About Crazy Lace Agate

Found only in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, crazy lace agate gets its name from the intricate banding that swirls across its surface in tight, layered patterns. The color palette runs from cream and soft gray through warm tan and brown, with rust-orange and red tones that are the hardest to find and the most prized. No two stones cut from the same deposit will have the same pattern. It is a variety of chalcedony, formed in volcanic rock, and the banding records successive layers of silica-rich fluid deposited over time. The stones with the most complex patterning are typically cut by gem cutters who know which face of the rough material to orient toward the surface.
