Fire and Steel, Sterling Silver Motto Pendant, Phoenix with Spear, Rebirth Talisman, Transformation Necklace
Description
"Fire and steel." In Latin, "Igne et ferro." The phrase began as a military declaration: in ancient Rome, a writ of igne ferroque authorized a commander to destroy completely, with fire and iron as the twin instruments of total force. It became a heraldic motto for families who claimed those same qualities - not as a threat, but as a tenet for living. What fire and pressure produce, if the material is right, is not destruction, but something harder and more useful than what came before.
The phoenix on this button carries that meaning in its beak. The spear it holds is a symbol of chivalric honor and knightly service. The phoenix itself rises with wings lifted, the image of transformation through ordeal, the figure that burns completely and returns stronger for it. Together they make the argument the motto states plainly: what survives fire and steel has earned its strength.
The pendant is cast from an antique livery button. These buttons were worn in the 18th and 19th centuries by soldiers, household staff, and royal servants, each one bearing the crest or insignia of the family they served. The back of this button is marked E Armfield & Company, Birmingham, a firm with roots in the Birmingham button trade going back to around 1763.
Cast sterling silver. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. This pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, about the size of a U.S. quarter. Weight is 8.4 grams.
Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.
