Cut an agate geode open along its longest axis and you get something like this: an elongated slice in near-black and white, the banding sweeping across the surface in dramatic arcs that don't soften or blur at the edges. The contrast is sharp and the pattern is specific to this stone and no other. At the center, a natural druzy pocket where fine crystals formed, partially filled now with a cluster of silver spheres that carry the eye into the interior rather than away from it.

This is an agate slice from Brazil, where agate geodes form in a range of sizes and interior patterns. This one was chosen for the sharpness of its banding and the depth of its color contrast, qualities that photographs hint at and the stone itself delivers fully.

The backing has been hand-scalloped to follow the natural elongated shape of the geode, with a textured surface and a deliberate dark patina that deepens the contrast between the frame and the stone's pale and dark interior. Silver spheres travel around the scalloped perimeter and up onto the handmade bail, tying the composition together without interrupting it.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures 2¼ inches (5.7 cm) long from the top of the bail to the bottom of the pendant, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is 11.5 grams.

Geode slices are thin cross-sections of agate geodes from Brazil, cut to reveal the banding and crystal formations inside. The patterns vary from stone to stone — no two geodes produce the same interior — and most have a central druzy pocket where fine crystals formed as the geode developed. Agate is a hard, durable chalcedony that takes a high polish and is found worldwide, but Brazilian agate geodes are particularly prized for the range and clarity of their banding.
