Pegasus doesn't need an introduction, but the story behind him is better than most people remember.

In Greek mythology, Pegasus wasn't born the way most creatures are. When Perseus killed Medusa, the winged horse sprang fully formed from the Gorgon's neck, a child of Medusa and Poseidon born from violence into something consequential and enduring. He went on to carry thunderbolts for Zeus, to help the hero Bellerophon slay the Chimera, and to become, in the end, a constellation. The Greeks made him a symbol of poetic inspiration, of the imagination that lifts thought off the ground, and gives it wings.

This pendant is cast in sterling silver from a Victorian-era antique button. The image shows Pegasus in deep relief, with wings spread, and with scrolling wind and wave elements swirling beneath him. The detail is clear: the musculature of the horse, the curl of the wings, the energy in the composition. It reads as a coin or a medallion, and wears like one too.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures approximately 1¼ inches, or 3.2 cm, long including the bail, and just over ¾ inch, or 1.9 cm, wide. Weight: 5.5 grams.
