Description

Labradorite keeps its best quality hidden until the light finds it. The stone sits quiet and grayish at rest, and then, depending on the angle of light, the flash arrives: green and gold, shifting across the surface with the kind of unhurried spectral glow that no photograph has ever fully captured, and no synthetic stone has ever convincingly replicated. This particular cab shows that flash with real strength, and the freeform triangle shape gives it a surface that catches light differently from every angle.

The spheres that arc across the top and extend slightly down the sides in various size are oxidized to a dark finish and then the high points are polished to add depth. Each sphere is individually placed so the grouping gives a "frilled" effect which ornaments the stone rather than overpowering it. ***The setting frames the stone without constraining it, and the organic edges of the freeform shape give the pendant a loose, relaxed character that wears just as well alone as it does with layered jewelry.

Hallmarked .925 and Blue Piranha.

Size: just under 1 inch (2.5 cm) long from top of bail to bottom of pendant, and 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) wide. Weight is 5.8 grams.

The pendant arrives gift boxed in a soft pouch with a story card.

Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.

Good for: the person who wants a stone that reveals its secrets only when the light is right.
For the woman who loves the gloaming and the threshold moments between day and night. For the collector who wants something that looks like it was cut from the northern lights.

About Labradorite

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral prized for its optical phenomenon called labradorescence, a spectral iridescence that shifts between blue, green, gold, and sometimes violet as the viewing angle changes. The effect comes from light refracting between microscopic layers within the stone rather than from the surface itself, which is why the flash seems to move and deepen rather than simply reflect. Named for the Labrador Peninsula in Canada where it was first described, labradorite is also found in Madagascar, Finland, and other locations worldwide. The Finnish variety, known as spectrolite, is particularly prized for the strength and range of its flash. Most labradorite is gray to dark in base color, and the intensity of the labradorescence varies significantly from stone to stone. The finest specimens show a strong, centered flash that covers most of the gem surface.
