Description

Mooka jasper doesn't cut into standard shapes easily, and the best examples make the most of its irregular and sometimes whimsical coloring. The lower cabochons in this pair are large, rounded, and organically outlined, each one slightly different from the other in contour and internal patterning. The color moves across them in fluid bands: peachy-pink, soft brown, and warm cream, with a slight translucency in places. The surface has a quiet richness that presents differently depending on the light: warmer and softer indoors, with the pink more present in natural light.

Above each jasper cabochon, a small faceted round amethyst sits in its own bezel, pale purple and transparent, catching light in sharp, bright points. The contrast between the two stones is the point of the pairing: the jasper is opaque, warm, and organic, while the amethyst is faceted, cool, and precise.

Between the two gems are curved, textured, bars with small silver spheres at the joints. The connective elements turn two separate bezels into a single composed design.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and ¾ inch (1.9 cm) wide. Weight is 14 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

A lever back option is available, please see photos and note your preference at checkout.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: the woman who wears organic shapes because she finds geometry limiting. A February birthday gift for the woman who's  done with the obvious amethyst and ready for the interesting one. The connoisseur whose jewelry drawer has a gap she hasn't been able to identify until now.

About Mooka Jasper:

Mooka jasper, also known as mookaite, comes from the Kennedy Ranges of Western Australia, where it is found along the banks of Mooka Creek. It is a sedimentary rock, deposited in ancient seabeds and silicified over millions of years. The color range is one of the widest of any jasper: deep red, yellow, cream, warm brown, peachy-pink, and purple can all appear within a single stone. The soft pink and warm brown tones in these particular cabochons are on the quieter end of the mookaite palette — the stone is capable of much more saturated color, which makes the restrained tones here a deliberate selection rather than a default.

About Amethyst:

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by trace amounts of iron and natural irradiation during formation. Its color ranges from pale lilac to deep purple, with the most prized stones showing a rich, saturated violet. It's one of the most widely distributed gemstones in the world, found in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, and many other locations. The faceted amethysts in this design are on the lighter end of the color range, chosen to complement rather than compete with the warm tones of the mooka jasper below.
