Motivational Motto Pendant, While I Breathe I Hope, Heraldic Victorian Button Jewelry, Sterling Silver
Description
"While I breathe, I hope" or in Latin, "Dum spiro, spero", is ancient enough that its origin can't be pinned to a single source. One of the earliest known references is from the 3rd century CE. It became a heraldic motto for families in England, Scotland, and Ireland. The state of South Carolina put it on their seal in 1777, and it's still there.
The motto is shown below a pair of crossed axes. These tools can be destructive but they can also be the fundamental tools of civilization. The axe fells the tree, which builds the house, which becomes part of a town, a community. The phrase is also a reminder to never give up. While there's life, there's hope.
The pendant is cast from an antique livery button. These buttons were worn in the 18th and 19th centuries by soldiers, household staff, and royal servants, each one bearing the crest or insignia of the family they served. The backs of these buttons retain their original factory markings. This one is marked for Firmin & Sons, and dates to circa 1890.
Cast sterling silver. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.
This pendant measures 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) long, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. The circle is about the size of a U.S. quarter. Weight is 6 grams.
Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.
