In Greek mythology the amphisbaena was said to have been born from the drops of blood that fell from Medusa's severed head, a creature spawned from one of the most powerful figures in the ancient world. The name comes from the Greek for "going both ways," and that duality was the point: a snake that could move in either direction, that had no single forward, no fixed path.

Ancient and medieval writers described the double-headed snake with a mixture of fascination and unease. It appeared in bestiaries alongside creatures of genuine natural history, treated as real, described in detail, given symbolic weight. A thing that moves both ways was a thing that could not be easily categorized or contained.

The symbolism that accumulated around it reflects that quality. The two-headed snake became associated with transformation, with the recognition that energy doesn't end but changes form, with the idea that direction is a choice rather than a fixed condition.

These earrings are cast from a vintage original. Each snake has two distinct heads: one upright and watchful, the other facing downward with a more open expression. The scale texture is fine and dense across the full length of the body, and the oxidizing settles into the recesses so every scale reads clearly.

Cast sterling silver, oxidized. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.
