Sterling Silver Medusa Pendant, Gorgon Necklace, Feminist Talisman, Antique Victorian Button Jewelry, Mythology
Description
Long a monstrous symbol in mythology, in recent years Medusa has been reclaimed by strong women and feminists as a symbol of strength and survivorship.
The beautiful (and chaste) Medusa served the powerful warrior goddess Athena. Poseidon found her so attractive that he couldn't keep away from her, and took her virginity in Athena's temple. When Athena found out, she transformed Medusa into the horrific creature most of us know of today.
Legend has it that Athena took her wrath out on Medusa because she couldn't punish Poseidon. But alternate versions of the myth indicate that Athena's 'punishment' might have been to keep Medusa safe from any other unwanted attention: no man would dare go near her now. Until one did...Perseus, who killed Medusa as she slept by cutting off her head. As she died, she birthed the winged horse Pegasus, soaring symbol of freedom.
It's unusual to see forward-facing portrayals in Greek art, yet Medusa stares directly at the viewer with a powerful, unflinching gaze, reminding us to not look away from what matters.
If you'd like a larger, or alternate version, I have another one in my shop here.
