The myth is old enough that no single culture owns it. The earliest versions appear in ancient Egyptian tradition, where a great heron associated with the sun god Ra was said to die and be reborn with each cycle of the sun. The Greeks had their own version: a bird of brilliant plumage that lived for centuries, built itself a nest of spices, ignited it, and rose again from the ashes. The early Christians adopted it as a symbol of resurrection, and by the High Middle Ages it had entered heraldic tradition, appearing most often as a crest.

In heraldry, the phoenix was the mark of a family that had endured. Whatever the household that wore this button had faced, they chose the bird that burns and rises as the image that best represented their resilience.

The pendant is cast from an antique livery button. These buttons were worn in the 18th and 19th centuries by soldiers, household staff, and royal servants, each one bearing the crest or insignia of the family they served. The back of the button retains its original factory marking: P&S Firmin, the earlier mark of the London firm now known as Firmin & Sons. That mark dates this button to approximately 1840 to 1875.

Cast sterling silver. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.

This pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, about the size of a U.S. quarter. Weight is 7 grams.
