"Risks delight me." In Latin, "Aspera me juvant." A family put this on their livery and meant it as a declaration: not that risk is accepted because there is no choice, but that stepping into the unknown is where a person finds out what they are capable of becoming.

The phrase belongs to a tradition of Latin heraldic mottoes that said something true and demanding about the household that chose them. This one makes a specific claim, that the uncertain path is not merely tolerated but actively sought, that risk and resistance are the conditions under which something worth having becomes possible. Without the attempt, there is no triumph.

The eagle has been a symbol of power, freedom, and the capacity for decisive action in heraldic tradition. Here it holds a laurel wreath, a centuries-old sign of achievement and victory.

The pendant is cast from an antique livery button. These buttons were worn in the 18th and 19th centuries by soldiers, household staff, and royal servants, each one bearing the crest or insignia of the family they served. The back of this button is marked G.H. Bullivant, Birmingham, a button maker whose mark dates to circa 1846.

Cast sterling silver. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. This pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long, 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, about the size of a U.S. quarter. Weight is 9 grams.
