Victorian Button Sterling Silver Pendant, Flying Crane Jewelry, Feminist Symbolism Necklace, Minimalist Bird Jewelry
Description
This crane doesn't fly in a straight line. That's the first thing you notice. She's airborne, wings out, going wherever she's going in her own particular way.
Cranes have carried symbolic weight across cultures for thousands of years. In East Asian tradition they represent longevity, good fortune, and fidelity, but in the Victorian world they were part of something more specific. The Victorians were passionate naturalists, cataloguing the flora and fauna around them with enthusiasm, and birds appeared everywhere in their decorative arts. But birds meant something beyond natural history, particularly for women. Victorian society was structured around restrictions for the female gender: limited roles, narrow expectations, the choice of housewife for the upper classes, domestic servant or a factory job for the lower class. If you were educated, you might become a governess teacher, maybe a nurse. In this era, birdwatching was one of the few outdoor activities considered acceptable for women without a male companion, which is perhaps why birds became such potent symbols of what was being withheld. This pendant, with its image of a free-flying crane, holds a lot of powerful symbolism.
Cast sterling silver and oxidized to bring out the relief detail.
Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures ¾ inch (1.9 cm) long and ½ inch (1.3 cm) wide. Pendant is smaller than a U.S. dime. Weight is 2 grams.
This crane is also available as earrings, listed separately in the shop here.
Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.
