Artemis Sterling Silver Statement Pendant, Greek Goddess Diana, Upcycled Antique French Button Jewelry

In this image, the goddess Diana wears the lunar crescent on her forehead, a bow and arrow floating before her, her hair loosely twisted up. She's the serene moon goddess here, not the fierce huntress in pursuit.

Artemis was fierce and independent, a huntress who answered to no one. As Diana she became broader: protector of wild creatures, patron of childbirth, keeper of the moon. The two identities layered over centuries into a single goddess who holds more than one story.

The original button bears an entwined "LR" on the back: the signature of Louis Armand Rault, a French sculptor and medallist who worked during the late 19th century, one of the most productive periods in the history of French medal design. Rault was celebrated in his time and largely forgotten after it, which is the fate of most craftsmen who work at miniature scale. His mark is still on this pendant. The Demeter pendant in my shop is also his work.

Cast in sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and stamped .925. The pendant measures just over 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and just under 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) wide, roughly the size of a U.S. half-dollar. Weight is 9 grams.
