Boulder chrysocolla is what happens when the chrysocolla isn't extracted from its host rock. Instead it's shaped inside it, so the finished gem carries both: vivid teal breaking through a deep, reddish-brown matrix in streaks and veins, like water finding its way through canyon stone. It's rarer in jewelry than chrysocolla alone, and considerably more interesting.

These freeform triangular cabochons are natural and untreated. The teal is clear and saturated, the matrix warm and deeply colored, and the contrast between them is the whole point. Each stone sits in a sterling silver bezel. Above it, a small curved textured bar with a single silver granule at one end connects the stone to the ear wire. The finding has a slight architectural quality that suits the angular shape of the stones without competing with them.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 1¾ inches (4.5 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and ½ inch (1.9 cm) wide. Weight is 18 grams.

Chrysocolla is a copper-bearing mineral that forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, often alongside turquoise, malachite, and azurite. It gets its color from iron and shares the blue-green range with turquoise. Boulder chrysocolla is cut to preserve the host rock matrix rather than remove it, allowing the natural relationship between the chrysocolla and its surroundings to remain visible in the finished stone. It takes a high polish and shows a wider range of color than most turquoise.
