Description

Athena is usually shown with an owl on her shoulder and an olive branch in her hand. But here she wears her war helmet, and the dragon on top of it makes clear which version of her this is: not the peacetime patron of weavers, but the goddess of warfare and strategy, the one who fought with her mind before she raised a spear.

She was a daughter of Zeus, which gave her considerable standing in the Greek pantheon, but her power was always more intellectual than brute. Where her brother Ares warred for dominance and aggression, Athena fought with foresight and precision. She was a protector of cities, most famously Athens, which bears her name. In peacetime she presided over handicrafts, particularly spinning and weaving. In Roman mythology her equivalent is Minerva, with much the same character and attributes.

The dragon on her helmet is a detail worth noting. In classical Greek tradition, dragons appeared on battle helmets as guardian figures, protectors of the warrior beneath. On Athena, the guardian of cities, it reads as a layered symbol: wisdom protecting strength, strength protecting wisdom.

Cast in sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and stamped .925. The pendant measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and just under ¾ inch (1.9 cm) wide, roughly the size of a U.S. penny. Weight is 3 grams.

Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: a birthday for the woman who leads with her intellect. A graduation gift for someone stepping into a new arena. A gift for the mythology lover who wants the warrior, not the diplomat. Self-purchase for the strategist.
