Greek Mythology Harpy Necklace, Crescent Moon Button Pendant, Sterling Silver, Feminist Jewelry, Birdwoman Talisman
Description
Before the word became an insult, the Harpies were something else entirely.
In early Greek mythology they were spirits of the sky, swift beyond any bird, strong enough to stir storms. They carried the winds. Some accounts describe them as agents of the gods, dispatched to deliver justice to those who had wronged others. The vilification came later, as it often does with powerful female figures: the swift and terrible became the shrill and monstrous. What they actually were, in the oldest stories, was formidable.
This pendant shows the Harpy partially concealed by a crescent moon, emerging from it or retreating into it, depending on how you look. Her hair, her wings, and one claw are visible, and the sky behind her is scattered with stars. The crescent itself carries a Greek key border, the meander pattern that runs through Greek decorative tradition as a symbol of continuity and the flow of time. A second crescent moon is hidden on the back of every piece.
Crescent moons have carried associations with change and female empowerment throughout history. Stars are a reference to guidance and finding direction. Together they frame a figure who was, before anyone decided otherwise, a force of nature.
This pendant is cast from a Victorian-era button, made sometime between 1837 and 1901, in a period when pictorial button makers were producing imagery dense with classical reference. The Harpies were an unusual but important subject.
Cast sterling silver. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.
The pendant measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and just under ¾ inch (1.9 cm) in diameter, about the size of a U.S. penny. Weight is 4.5 grams.
Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.
