Greek Mythology, Sphinx Button Pendant, Sterling Silver, Dark Academia, Feminist Necklace, Victorian Symbolism Jewelry
Description
The Greek Sphinx doesn't ask questions to get answers. She asks them to find out what you're made of. In Greek mythology, the Sphinx guarded the road to Thebes and posed her riddle to every traveler who passed. Those who couldn't answer, didn't continue. She wasn't a monster in the way later traditions remembered her: she was a gatekeeper, a figure who held the line between ignorance and understanding. The laurel leaves surrounding her are intentional, as laurel is a symbol of achievement and hard-won knowledge.
The tradition she represents is ancient and durable: the sphinx was a guardian of thresholds, a keeper of difficult truths, a figure who demanded you know yourself before she would let you pass. The four classical virtues most often associated with her are to know, to dare, to will, and to keep silent. These are not a set of rules, but a discipline:
Knowing requires striving for knowledge and seeking the truth.
Daring requires the willingness to question what is comfortable.
Willing requires focusing thoughts and meditating on goals.
And silence, maybe the hardest of all, requires listening before speaking, and speaking only when it's worth it.
This pendant is cast from an early 20th-century French button. The original was likely made in the period when French button makers were producing some of the finest pictorial metalwork in the world: dense with imagery, rich in symbol; the Sphinx - and other Greek mythological figures - were popular. The pendant depicts the classical form: head of a woman, body of a lion, wings of a bird.
Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, roughly the size of a U.S. quarter. Weight is 8 grams.
Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.
Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.
Good for: the woman who doesn't have to explain herself. A birthday for the reader, the philosopher, the one who asks hard questions. Self-purchase for the collector who takes mythology seriously.
