Description

Green turquoise is less common than its blue counterpart. The cabochons in these earrings are a clear, bright aqua-green, the color of shallow water over dark stone, cutting through a deep, chocolate brown matrix. The contrast is sharp and unapologetic. Not everyone reaches for green turquoise, but the ones who do tend to collect it.

The stones are from Hubei province in China, which produced some of the most matrix-heavy, high-contrast turquoise in the world before the mine closed in 2014. These freeform oval cabochons were acquired years ago, and held onto until the time was right to release them.

Each stone sits in a sterling silver bezel. Above it, a small circle connects the stone to the ear wire. The setting lets the stones carry the weight of the piece.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and just under ½ inch (1.3 cm) wide. Set on sterling silver ear wires. Weight is 12 grams.

A lever back option is available, please see photos and note your preference at checkout.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: a December birthday that deserves a stone with some history behind it. A gift for the person who finds the usual blue turquoise a little predictable. A keepsake for the turquoise lover who collects with intention.

About Turquoise:

Turquoise is one of the oldest stones in the gem record, worn by Tibetans, Persians, and Native Americans long before it had a modern name. It forms in arid regions where copper-rich groundwater moves through host rock, which is why the matrix (the surrounding rock left behind in the stone) varies so dramatically by source. Hubei province in China was known for producing turquoise with unusually dark, dense matrix and vivid color contrast. The mine has been closed since 2014, making existing stock increasingly difficult to find.

The five major turquoise regions are the American Southwest, Persia (now Iran), Mexico, Tibet, and China.
