Description

This Artemis image is doing something unexpected. Her hair is down - unusual for a goddess figure in classical design - and she's holding a spear rather than the bow she's most known for. The lunar crescent on her head identifies her unmistakably. But the spear makes you look twice.

The spear is more typically associated with Athena, her half-sister. Mythology does confirm that Artemis used one for hunting, so it isn't wrong, but it's rarely depicted. Whoever designed this button chose to show her in a less familiar moment, and that choice makes the pendant more interesting.

Before the goddess was Diana to the Romans, she was Artemis to the Greeks. As Artemis, she was a fierce and independent huntress, beholden to no one. As Diana, she became something broader: a protector, a figure of the moon and the natural world, a patron of women in childbirth and of all woodland creatures. The two identities blended over centuries into a single goddess who contains multitudes.

Artemis contains more than one story. Huntress. Protector of childbirth. Keeper of woodland creatures. Goddess of the moon. Choose the version that speaks to you, or claim all of them. If you have the Diana with bow and hound, or the Diana with the bow and arrows pendant, all three are in my shop and share a mythology.

This pendant is cast from a Victorian-era button. If you're drawn to this pendant, the Diana with bow and hound is also in my shop. It's a different button, different side of the same goddess.

Cast in sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and stamped .925. The pendant measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and ¾ inch (1.9 cm) wide, roughly the size of a U.S. penny. Weight is 3 grams.

Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: a birthday for the woman who knows her own mythology. A gift for the reader, the classicist, or the collector of things that make people ask questions. A graduation gift for someone stepping into her strength.
