Crazy lace agate doesn't always announce itself in color. This pair works in quieter tones: cream and warm gray and soft tan, the banding moving across each stone in loose, layered swirls that shift between opaque and translucent as the light changes. Where the stone is translucent you can see depth beneath the surface, the rock structure visible through the material itself. It's kind of surface you find yourself looking into, rather than at.

The banding moves differently across each stone, which is true of all crazy lace agate. These were chosen for the complexity, the evenness of the neutral tones, and for the way the translucent areas keep the surface from going flat.

The A-frame setting scales to the width of the stones. Two curved, textured bars sweep outward from a small loop at the top, widening as they descend to cradle the wide bezel at the base. Silver spheres sit at intervals along the bars. The design gives these stones the room they need without overbuilding around them.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 2¼ inches (5.7 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) wide. Weight is just under 17 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

About Crazy Lace Agate: 

Found only in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, crazy lace agate gets its name from the intricate banding that swirls across its surface in tight, layered patterns. The color palette runs from cream and soft gray through warm tan and brown, with rust-orange and red tones that are the hardest to find and the most prized. No two stones cut from the same deposit will have the same pattern. It is a variety of chalcedony, formed in volcanic rock, and the banding records successive layers of silica-rich fluid deposited over time. The stones with the most complex patterning are typically cut by gem cutters who know which face of the rough material to orient toward the surface.
