Crazy Lace Agate Earrings, Sterling Silver, Gray Tan Oval Cabochon, A-Frame Design, Statement Jewelry
Description
The wide horizontal ovals of these crazy lace agate cabochons are banded in soft gray, warm tan, and cream, with a thin line of rust-orange running through the center of each stone. The banding shifts across each stone: tight parallel lines in some areas, looser cloud-like forms in others, with slightly translucent patches in the upper portions where the material opens up. The horizontal movement of the banding and the oval shape work together, the eye moving left to right across each stone before settling into the detail.
The rust-orange line sits in a slightly different position in each cabochon, the banding breaks differently, the translucent patches fall in different places. Despite the subtle differences, the two stones make a coherent pair.
The A-frame setting cradles each horizontal oval: two curved, textured bars sweeping outward and down from a small loop at the top, meeting the wide bezel at the base. Silver spheres sit at intervals along the bars, and the design gives the stones horizontal room without losing vertical presence.
Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 2¼ inches (5.7 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and 1¼ inches (3.2 cm) wide. Weight is just over 15 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

About Crazy Lace Agate:
Found only in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, crazy lace agate gets its name from the intricate banding that swirls across its surface in tight, layered patterns. The color palette runs from cream and soft gray through warm tan and brown, with rust-orange and red tones that are the hardest to find and the most prized. No two stones cut from the same deposit will have the same pattern. It is a variety of chalcedony, formed in volcanic rock, and the banding records successive layers of silica-rich fluid deposited over time. The stones with the most complex patterning are typically cut by gem cutters who know which face of the rough material to orient toward the surface.
