Description

This pair of wide, triangular dendritic opal cabochons are white, clean and opaque, with black manganese dendrites branching across the surface in forms that look less like mineral inclusions and more like something drawn with intention: bare branches, a tree line, the edge of a forest seen from a distance, on a morning when the light is soft and the air is still.

One stone is sparse and open, the dendrites spread wide across the white ground. The other is denser, the branching forms clustering toward the center in a way that reads like depth rather than pattern. They make a pair because the material shares a character, not because the stones are identical. Dendritic opal keeps its own records.

The A-frame setting gives these stones the architecture they deserve. Two curved, textured bars sweep outward and down from a small loop at the top, widening as they descend to cradle the bezel-set triangle at the base. Silver spheres sit at intervals along the bars. The metalwork is clean and structural, a deliberate counterpoint to the organic branching of the dendrites inside the stone.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. Earrings measure 2¼ inches (5.7 cm) long from the top of the ear wire, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is just under 15 grams. Set on sterling silver ear wires.

A lever back option is available, please see photos and note your preference at checkout.

Good for: the person who finds stillness more interesting than spectacle. The collector whose eye goes to composition before color. A self-purchase for the woman who saw these, and fell in love immediately.

About Dendritic Opal:

The branching black forms inside dendritic opal are not plant material, despite how convincingly they resemble it. These are manganese or iron oxide deposits left behind when mineral-rich water moves through fissures in the stone and then evaporates, leaving mineral traces. The pattern is determined entirely by the path the water took and where the minerals concentrated, which is why no two dendritic opal stones are ever the same. The gem cutter's job is to orient the rough so that the most compelling composition faces up, which requires reading the stone before cutting it. Found in locations across the world, dendritic opal is sometimes called Merlinite or scenic opal, though these names refer to the same material.
