Description

What looks like texture is actually time. The surface of this fossil coral cabochon records the cellular structure of ancient coral polyps, preserved in stone over millions of years as the original organic material was slowly replaced by minerals. The warm gray tones and the spotted, honeycomb-like patterning weren't cut or polished into the stone; they already existed, created by geological processes through nature and time.

Spheres of various sizes surround the gem. Each sphere is individually planned and placed so the grouping gives a "frilled" effect, which ornaments the stone rather than overpowering it. The contrast between the dark silver and the warm, pale stone is quiet but deliberate, and the overall design has the kind of considered weight that makes it feel like something worth being thoughtfully collected, rather than mindlessly purchased.

Hallmarked .925 and Blue Piranha.

Size: 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) long from top of bail to bottom of pendant, and just under 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is 12.4 grams.

The pendant arrives gift boxed in a soft pouch with a story card.

Each pendant is available without a chain. If you'd like to add one, I offer several lengths and styles, please choose from the options at checkout. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length.

Good for: someone who finds a rare material more compelling than an abundant one. The collector who wants something that looks like it came from a natural history museum and a jeweler's bench in equal measure. The woman who has always worn her taste quietly,

About Fossil Coral

Fossilized coral occurs when ancient coral reefs are buried under sediment and silica-rich groundwater moves through the original material over millions of years, gradually replacing the coral with agate. This is the same process that produces petrified wood, and the coral's cellular structure, the physical record of how it grew and what lived inside it, is preserved in the replacement mineral with remarkable fidelity. The result is a stone that carries the pattern of something that was alive hundreds of millions of years ago. Fossilized coral is found in several locations worldwide, with notable deposits in Indonesia, the United States, and parts of Africa. Each stone is a cross-section of a reef that no longer exists.
