Description

This cameo is left-facing, which is the less common direction in cameo portraiture. The woman's hair is loosely pinned and caught mid-movement, as if the wind came through just before the carver set the tool down.

This carving is on helmet shell, and cameos carved from helmet shell have a warmth that stone cameos rarely match. The background is a deep apricot-orange while her face, her hair, and the drape at her shoulder are all creamy white. The contrast is sharp, while the carving is intimate: the curl at the ear, the line of the jaw, the particular way the hair lifts at the crown.

The shell cameo tradition runs from ancient Greece through Rome, through the Renaissance, and reaches one of its peaks in the 19th century, when carved cameos became a staple of fashionable dress and sentimental jewelry alike. Helmet shell became the standard cameo material because of its natural two-tone layering and the relative ease of carving compared to hardstone.

This cameo is round rather than the more common oval format, set in a sterling silver rope-twist border with a bail.

Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925. The pendant measures 1½ inches (3.8 cm) long from the top of the bail, and just over 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide. Weight is 10.2 grams.

Each pendant is available without a chain, so you may use your own if you prefer. If you want to add a chain, I offer different lengths and styles. Every chain comes with a 2-inch extender so you can vary the length. Please choose your chain from the options at checkout.

Your purchase arrives gift boxed, presented in a soft pouch with a story card.

Good for: the person who collects quietly beautiful things. The friend who stopped wearing fast fashion and started wearing things with a past. The woman who would have thrived in a Victorian parlor, and knows it.

About cameos:

Cameos have been carved for thousands of years, falling in and out of fashion since ancient Greece, while the Victorian era gave them their biggest cultural high point.

Cameos are carved from shell but they can also be created from glass, hardstone (such as sardonyx), lava, vulcanite, and coral, as well as other materials. Hand-carving continues today, most famously in Italy, where the tradition is still very much alive. The cameos I work with came from an antique market, found loose and in varying condition. Some were chipped, but some were quietly extraordinary. Those are the ones I kept.
