An owl perches on a branch in the night sky, encircled by a crescent moon and seven stars. Each element on this button pendant has meaning.

The owl has been a symbol of wisdom and truth across cultures for thousands of years, most famously as the companion of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom. The crescent moon carries its own long tradition: female empowerment, fertility, cycles, change. And the seven stars dotting the crescent are thought to represent the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters star cluster, one of the most recognized formations in the night sky. Seven is also considered auspicious in many cultures independently of the astronomical connection. Whether or not the original button maker intended all of that, it's all there.

The pendant was cast from a Victorian-era button, produced sometime between 1837 and 1901.

Cast in sterling silver, hallmarked Blue Piranha and stamped .925. The pendant measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and just under ¾ inch (1.9 cm) wide, slightly smaller than a U.S. penny. Weight is 3 grams.
