Upcycled Antique Victorian Button Jewelry, Flying Crane Sterling Silver Feminist Earrings, Bird Talisman

This tiny crane is a symbol of something much larger: freedom. Though its symbolism spans thousands of years and many cultures, this image comes from an antique Victorian button. And for women in that period, birds carried particular meaning. The natural world was one of the few subjects they were encouraged to study; birdwatching one of the few outdoor activities permitted to them. A bird in flight, pressed into a button and worn on a coat, was a quiet declaration about freedom and the desire for it.

Across East Asia cranes carry associations of longevity, grace, and the quiet persistence that outlasts more dramatic forms of strength. In Japan, a thousand folded paper cranes is a gesture of deep hope. In China, the crane flies between earth and heaven, a messenger between worlds.

Cast sterling silver and oxidized to bring out the relief detail. Hallmarked Blue Piranha and .925.
